The context of the narrative: The plot of this myth places Jonah fleeing from a divine command to warn Nineveh (the capital of the Assyrian Empire and a historic enemy) of its destruction because of its extreme wickedness. During his escape by ship, a fierce storm breaks out, and to save the crew, Jonah asks to be thrown into the water; at that very moment, the sea magically calms down (Jonah 1:15). Instead of drowning, he is swallowed by a great fish where he spends three days and three nights praying (Jonah 1:17). What is the real objective? To make the viewer assume that, because a supposedly neutral machine says it, the book must be infallible. But incoherence is exposed, not blessed. Respecting God means respecting truth, and when we pass this narrative through the filter of formal logic and history, the “divine design” is revealed for what it really is: human editorial engineering.
